How I got the cracked heels.
I have cracked heels problem after I become a full time work at home mum. Because I rarely wear slippers at home. At first they look dry skin then started to crack. I tried to put lotion, but the cracked thick & rough skin around the heels still there. I also like to wear slippers around when I go out, that might also be one of the problem for the cracked to dismiss as slippers cant protect the heels whereas they add up the roughness and more cracks.
After a while living with cracked heels, I feel a little embarrassed when wearing sandals outdoor. Because the appearance of cracked heels very ugly to me, and when walking outdoor, the dust can stick around the cracked lines, and making them even more uglier and dirty.
So I start my search on the Internet about cracked heels and how to heal them.
Don't panic if you have cracked heels problem, as they are a common foot problem.
What actually causes cracked heels?
Dryness of skin, standing for too long, wearing shoes/sandals with and open back, flat feet, high arched feet, improperly fitting shoes, athlete's foot, thyroid disease, diabetes.
Cracked heels can be treated as below:
- apply moisturizer cream around the cracked areas, day and night, if possible wear a pair of shocks after applying moisturizer at night. I don't buy special cracked heels cream, only use whatever lotion I have and baby oil.
- pumice stone is a good tool to reduce the thickness of the hard skin (I bought the pumice stone for only S$2 each). You can see a smoother skin after rubbing with pumice stone, although the crack lines still there, but after few more scrub and applying lotion they do look all better.
- wear sandals/slippers or open backed shoes or thin soled shoes less often, if possible avoid wearing them
- wear shoes and good absorbing sole shocks
Tips:
I am sure after a long day of work, you must be having a pair of tired feet, so it's a good idea to indulge yourself while watching TV and keeping your feet at rest.What I normally do is get a bucket of warm to hot water adding some salt and letting my feet rest while watching TV, after few minutes I will use pumice stone to scrub my heels, because it's easier to scrub after soften the thick skin. It's a 3-in-1 benefits, I can relax my feet while watching TV and can smoother my cracked heels. After that dry the wetness and apply lotion and put on a pair of shock. My feet really feel good. Now I can say goodbye to ccracked heels.
